Tourist Places In Tirur
A
small town in Kerala and one of its most significant business centres, Tirur,
is located in the Malappuram district of Kerala. Added to its importance is its
historical significance due to the fact that it was Tirur which was a part of
the first railway line in Kerala. Tour to Tirur takes the visitor in and around
Tirur where there are a number of places of historical significance. What makes
Tirur a unique destination in Kerala, is the religious harmony in which people
from different creeds stay.
Tuncan Parambu
The birthplace of
Thunjathu Ramanujan Ezhuthachan, the father of Malayalam language. The famous
"Thunjan Utsavam" is held here every year in the first week of
February. During this festival many literary luminaries, singers and classical
dancers gather here. Thunjan Paramba is located in Annara, 1.5 km away from
Tirur railway station. A memorial for the great poet has been built at Thunjan
Paramba, where a week long literary mela is organised in the last week of
December. This place is sacred for all who speak Malayalam.
Thunjan Paramba is a hallowed ground where
hundreds of children are introduced into the world of writing, soon after
infancy, when they first trace the letters of the Malayalam alphabets in sand
taken from that revered spot which was Ezhuthachan's home. People in thousands
reach Thunjan Paramba with their children, to initiate them into the world of
letters on the Vijayadasami day. Children are made to write on the white sands
of Thunjan Paramba with their fingers. Also young poets of Kerala come on that
day to offer their first poem.

Thunchaththu Ezhuthachan Malayalam
University
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will
inaugurate the Thunchathu Ramanujan Malayalam University at Tirur
Thunchanparambu on November 1, 2012. There will be nine schools. MA courses in
Malayalam language, literature, comparative literature, translation, theatre,
visual arts and traditional architecture studies, culture, media and knowledge
heritage will begin in the months of June and July.
Wagon Tragedy
The Wagon Tragedy was the death of a large
number of prisoners on 10 November 1921 in the Malabar region of Kerala state
of India. The prisoners had been taken into custody following unrest known as
Moplah rebellion in Malabar, and their deaths through apparent negligence
discredited the British Raj and generated sympathy for the Indian independence
movement.
Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and the
national leaders of India, there was a widespread and peaceful uprising against
the British colonial rule of India. After a series of events that culminated in
violent clashes between police and protesters, Martial law was introduced and
the rebellion mostly crushed. The British packed 70 prisoners into a railway
goods wagon at Tirur railway station to be sent to the Coimbatore jails. By the
time they reached their destination 61 of the prisoners had died from
suffocation. A monument to this notorious tragedy can be now seen in Tirur.
Mamankam Festival [Thirunavaya]
The land of ancient Mamankam, Thirunavaya is
7 km south of Tirur. Situated on the banks of Bharathapuzha River, it is a
place of historical importance.
The place has three temples, dedicated
to the Trimurtis, the gods of creation, sustenance and annihilation of life,
according to the Hindu belief strewn on the banks of the Bharathapuzha. The
famous vedic Vidyalaya Othanmar Madom of ancient times, is on the bank of
Bharathapuzha, near the Siva Temple. This madom was a centre of Aryanisation
through Sanskrit and Vedic education, as Thirunavaya was believed to be the
main centre, where Parasurama brought and settled Brahmins.
Nilayoram Tourist Park Kuttippuram
Bharathapuzha, famed as the Nila, is a spectacular heritage river in God’s own Country. Originating in the Anaimalai Hills in the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu, the word ‘Nila’ clearly describes the culture and heritage of the region.
Nilayoram means on the banks of the Nila and the park is a convenient spot to rest, relax and recreate especially during the mornings and evenings.
Nila is one of the top tourist icons in the State because of its gigantic potential for developing diverse forms of tourism like eco-tourism, cultural tourism, festival tourism, historical and heritage tourism. Nila’s banks are ideal for developing nature-based tourism.
The University of Calicut
The University of
Calicut is an affiliating university located at Thenjipalam, Malappuram in the
southern state of Kerala in India. The University has a number of off-campus
centres in neighbouring districts especially Kozhikkode.
Mampuram Mosque
The Mampuram Mosque
is a famous mosque located in Tirurangadi in the Malappuram District of Kerala,
south India. Historically related to the Mappila Lahala of 1921 against the
British Government.
Padinjarekara Beach
Situated at the end
of the Tipu Sultan road near Ponnani in Malappuram district, this beach offers
a breathtaking view of the confluence of the Bharathapuzha, the Tirur Puzha and
the Arabian Sea. Tourists can enjoy a ride on water scooters or speed boats and
also munch on tidbits at floating coffee
Ponnani Fishing Harbour
Ponnani is one of the
oldest port on Malabar Coast and has contributed to the trade and economy of
Malabar from very early times. This port was used as a hub for trading with
Arabs and Europeans in the early ages of British Colonial rule in Malabar. In
the early days, Ponnani was a notable place for the manufacture of big wooden
boats (called "Uru" or "Pattemari"). Though this place is
industrially backward now, some traditional industries based on coir and coir
products, marine products, etc. are dominating from the very early times.
